INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Gloria Gray returned to the Inglewood City Council dais Tuesday for her first in-person meeting after a five month medical leave following major back surgery.
Gray said she remained actively engaged with District 1 residents and city business throughout her recovery, despite being away from council chambers. “I am very excited about being back at the dais. I have never been gone,” Gray said during Tuesday’s meeting, noting that she continued communicating with constituents by phone while recovering.
Her return comes as attention gradually shifts toward Inglewood’s next municipal election cycle. Gray has not publicly announced whether she intends to seek re-election to the District 1 seat in November 2026.
The City Clerk is expected to open the nomination and filing period for the 2026 municipal election July 2026, meaning no candidates have officially qualified for the ballot and no challengers have publicly emerged.
Mayor James T. Butts Jr. and District 2 Councilmember Alex Padilla are scheduled to face voters sooner in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election.
Still, Gray’s political future could become increasingly significant as Inglewood enters another contentious election cycle shaped by debates over digital billboards, neighborhood fireworks stand permits, and continued development tied to the city’s expanding sports and entertainment corridor.
